Apple released iOS 18.1.1 to fix two serious security vulnerabilities that are being exploited, recommending users to update immediately to protect their devices and personal data.
Apple has just released the iOS 18.1.1 emergency update for iPhone, and all users are recommended to update immediately. The reason is because iOS 18.1.1 fixes two serious security vulnerabilities that are being exploited in practice.
Information about vulnerabilities patched in iOS 18.1.1
Apple doesn’t reveal many details about what’s being fixed to give users a chance to update before hackers take advantage of these vulnerabilities. However, the company said iOS 18.1.1 “provides important and recommended security patches for all users.”
- First vulnerability (CVE-2024-44308):
This vulnerability resides in the JavaScriptCore framework, which could lead to malicious code execution if a user interacts with maliciously crafted web content. Apple says this issue may be actively exploited on Mac systems using Intel chips.
- Second vulnerability (CVE-2024-44309):
This is a vulnerability related to WebKit, the core engine of the Safari browser. If exploited, this vulnerability could lead to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, allowing hackers to inject malicious code into trusted websites or applications.
Apple also noted that this vulnerability could be exploited on Intel Mac systems.
More updates from Apple
In addition to iOS 18.1.1, Apple also released iOS 17.7.2 for users who have not yet upgraded to iOS 18, which fixes the same two security vulnerabilities. Besides, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 and visionOS 2.1.1 are also updated to resolve similar issues.
Why should you update iOS 18.1.1 immediately?
Although only two vulnerabilities were fixed, they are both very serious. Sean Wright, application security expert at Featurespace, commented that the JavaScriptCore vulnerability allows hackers to remotely target and execute malicious code on the victim’s device. Although the malware may be limited to the sandbox protection system, hackers still have the ability to redirect users to malicious websites or steal session tokens.
The WebKit vulnerability is similarly impactful and has the potential to impact Apple’s entire ecosystem, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac, due to the way Apple controls browsers on its platform.
Wright recommends that users Update as soon as possibleand be extra cautious with untrustworthy websites or links.

This update applies to the following devices:

- iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation or later)
