#Twitter’s blue tick is back for high profile accounts, even without payment. #BlueTick #VerifiedAccounts #SocialMedia #OnlinePresence #AudienceBuilding
After a brief hiatus, Twitter’s coveted blue verification tick is once again being granted to high profile accounts. The social media platform announced that it has resumed accepting applications for the coveted badge, which signals that an account is authentic and belongs to a notable public figure, celebrity, or brand.
Twitter had suspended its verification process in 2017 after controversy erupted over the amplified visibility it provided to accounts that promoted hate speech and other harmful content. At the time, the blue tick was seen as a symbol of prestige, but it was also criticized for encouraging people to equate verification with credibility.
After a hiatus of nearly four years and a period of revision, Twitter has reintroduced the verification process, stating that it is “starting slowly” to ensure that the verification process is accurate, transparent, and “reflective of the current verification criteria.” However, the company has not revealed precisely what those criteria are or how often verified accounts will be reevaluated.
Users can apply for verification via a form accessible through the Twitter app or website. The company will examine the applicant’s public profile data, such as articles, pictures, and a summary of their function, as well as whether they adhere to Twitter’s terms of service and rules.
However, not all accounts are eligible for the blue tick. Twitter has explicitly stated that it does not allow accounts for those under the age of 18, people who have impersonated, glorified hatred or violence, or violated the platform’s policies. Furthermore, accounts must be active, complete and have a profile photograph and a confirmed email address to be considered.
The reintroduction of the blue tick badge, if done correctly, could serve to promote transparency and credibility on the social media site, establishing a clear distinction between verified and unverified accounts. However, Twitter must be mindful of curating the verification process to guarantee that verified accounts are dependable and trustworthy, avoiding the risks of user backlash over false advertising.
